Can you believe its already September?? The past months sure have gone by like a whirlwind.

Compared to the past years I suddenly got a bit of media coverage all at once, which I’d like to share here (also partly as a diary to my future self, haha).

ご機嫌いかがですか？　

いやー、もう9月なんですね。なんだか時がたつのが早くて参っちゃいます（年寄りです　笑）。夏ばてしてるんではないか、と思っていらっしゃる方々に（？）、近況についてご報告します。

The Japan Times

Due to the “KimOhNo” incident I got interviewed for The Japan Times (1st July 2019) about what kimono are to me and my work.　

例の”KimOhNo事件”で、日本国内外で活躍するキモノ専門家の方々にまじって、僭越ながら、なんと私も2019年7月1日付のJapan Timesにインタビューをして頂きました。

Just a small recap, in case the news had passed you: Kim Kardashian West announced her her new underwear shape line as “Kimono” and tried to register the word kimono as a trademark in June. This sparked a big anti-movement worldwide of people pressing the fact that “Kimono is not underwear” yet a historical garment and a long Japanese tradition.

“KimOhNo事件”（勝手にそう呼んでいます　汗） とは：世界的に有名なマルチタレント　キム・カダーシアンが、自身の矯正下着ブランドとして”Kimono”を発表し、6月には商標も取得していました。これに、世界の着物ファンや関係者などが、「着物は下着じゃない」し、「日本の伝統の衣服であり、長い歴史をベースにする大切なもの」と反響を呼びました。

(Ultimately, now a few months later our protests paid off and the shape wear has been renamed and the trademark withdrawn!)　

私の知っている方々も多く参加した反対運動をうけて、キムもこのブランド名を取りやめ、先日、新たな別の名称を発表しました。

I was super excited to have my work (the collaborative velvet dinosaur skeleton kimono I made with Shishumania) printed in such a large scale!

ベルベットで製作した、恐竜の化石の着物（別名：令和着物）がでっかく掲載されました。Japan Timesさんありがとう。

この一件でキム・カダーシアンは、日本中にその名を知らしめることになり、もしかすると、これもキムさん側の周到なメディア戦略だったのかもと陰謀論も考えられます（考えすぎ　笑）が、ただ、知らなかっただけで、単に、キムさんは、キモノという言葉をカッコいいと思ってくれていたんだと推測してます。 一昔前に、キムさんが、キモノをジャケットとして着てるのを見たことがあります。キムさんも悪気はなかったんでしょう。

世界のキム・カダーシアンが巻き起こした騒動でもあったので、世界に「キモノ」そのもの、そして、「キモノとはなんぞや」のメッセージを伝播できるよい機会になったのは、怪我の功名ともいえます。

目まぐるしい情報の移り変わりの中、 “KimOhNo事件” そのものも言及されることはなくなりました。でも、これからも草の根レベルから、少しでもキモノの良さ、伝統について、情報発信するお手伝いをしていきたいと思ってます。

Tokyo Weekender

Almost simultaneously (but not connected to above incident) my styling and direction work also made the cover and some pages in the July 2019 Tokyo Weekender Issue.
Actually the retro inspired photo which made the cover was my first styled photo shoot several years ago – it is funny to see it now printed after all this time.

Japan Timesさんと同時期に、スタイリングとディレクションをつとめたお仕事が、Tokyo Weekenderの2019年7月版に掲載されました！な、な、なんと、表紙も！！

German TV / SAT.1 Documentary

In May I was shooting for part of a documentary and interview on Tokyo and its people. The program is called “Grenzenlos die Welt entdecken” which is German for “discovering the world, limitless” and aired on the 10th of August on SAT.1 (one of the major channels).

さて、今年の5月には（少なくともドイツ人にとっては）とても大きなお仕事をさせてもらいました。ドイツのキーTV局SAT.1（ザット・アインツと読みます）の、 “Grenzenlos die Welt entdecken（果てしない世界発見（ヒトシ君人形の番組ではありませんよ　笑））”という番組からの取材をうけ、また、お手伝いをさせてもらいました。

今回の新作Salzオリジナル着物の撮影、アンティークショップ訪問、レトロな喫茶店でのインタビューを行いました。

緊張しましたが、とてもよい経験となりました。撮影は、時間に追われながらの大変な作業ですが、とても楽しかったです。
2日半の撮影ですが、実際の放映時間は5－10分です！

重い機材を抱えるカメラマンさんや音声さん、ディレクタさん、日本側のコーディネータさん、みなさん、お疲れ様でした。また、別の機会に一緒にお仕事できるといいですね。
