Shibuya Kimono Photoshoot

A while back I got an enquiry from a super talented photographer named Saq Imtiaz, who shoots a lot for VOGUE in Paris as well.
He was briefly in Tokyo and we squeezed in a two-outfit Kimono shoot even he barely slept for a week.

Before the shoot I was out hunting for locations but actually on the day, the photographers schedule was really tight so we only could manage to shoot at the (a little too generic but famous) Shibuya scramble crossing.

The first kimono coordinate features one of my most precious kimono, a dramatic and entirely hand painted piece of art with stormy clouds, a rough sea and flying eagle.
Paired with another one of my prime pieces, the Hannya mask Nagoya obi. Just because the kimono itself isn’t cool enough. (Hehe!) You know I always need to go beyond.
Zouri sandals are my own design and the leather tabi by JOTARO SAITO.

For the glam factor I added some vintage accessories and did the hair in a slightly retro undo as well. (I can’t believe I could even make a proper hairstyle!) The makeup and curling of the hair was done by the gorgeous model Veronika (half Japanese / Russian) herself in line with my concept.

Enough with the talk! Let’s have a look!

Afterwards we had literally no time, but I prepared so much for this shoot that I insisted to do at least a quick shoot of the second outfit as well.
Quick change of makeup and speed dressing needed to be done. I was breathless, but also due to the amazing model and photographer Chai Hong, who did the second shoot we got some great images too.

The second outfit is a gorgeous creme coloured silk houmongi kimono with branches of red plum blossoms all over. A great kimono, which already sold through my shop and found a new owner.
Paired with a gold black checkered obi, a red shigoki and pokkori geta this outfit was meant to be playful and fun!

The origami crane headpiece was made by my friend Etsuyo and borrowed for the shoot.

A big thank you again for the amazing Photographer team of three, who were jumping on and off the crossing, laying on the street shooting and holding the flash umbrella in position.
