「オペラ蝶々夫人へ衣装提供させて頂きました！」Madama Butterfly Opera

You probably have heard of “Madame Butterfly” – a famous short story written in 1898?

Mr. Pinkerton, an American naval officer gets stationed in Nagasaki and after encouragement takes on a Japanese wife and household. After marrying and spending brief time with his wife ChoCho-san who works as a Geisha, his ship has to leave Japan.
During his absence and without his knowledge ChoCho-san bears a son and patiently waits 3 years for Pinkerton to return to her as promised.
Whilst everyone recommends her to file a divorce and take on a Japanese husband, she insists on his return. Finally one day his ship returns to the harbor, however he does not visit ChoCho-san. Instead she finds out that he brought his American wife who plans to take the son to America. Heartbroken ChoCho attempts suicide, yet decides to take life in her own hand and escape with her son.

皆さん、お元気されてますか？もうすっかり冬ですね。マフラーして、家では、エアコン、ストーブつけている人も多いのではないでしょうか？朝起きると窓が曇っていたなんてことも増えてきました。

コンビニ行けば、すでにジングルベールのクリスマスの音楽だし、時間が経つの早！数週間もしたら、もういくつ寝ると～ってなるんですよ。信じられますか？！

さて、蝶々夫人って知ってます？（唐突すぎるだろ！ｗ）

1898年に書かれたお話で、アメリカの海軍士官ピンカートンが長崎に配属され、地元の蝶々さんと恋仲になるという話です。

蝶々さんという芸者さんを娶り、日本に住むようになりながら、日本を去らなくてはならなくなります。ピンカートンは知らなかったのですが、蝶々さんは妊娠しておりました。それから3年間、いつ帰るかわからないピンカートンを待ちます。周囲からは離婚を勧められるも、かたくなに拒むのでした。

そんな、ある日、ピンカートンは長崎に寄航するのですが、蝶々さんを尋ねることはなかったのです。なんと、ピンカートンは、アメリカで結婚し、自分の息子もアメリカへ連れて行こうとしていたのです。

なんというヒドイ仕打ちでしょう・・・涙。

失意の中で、蝶々さんは自殺を試みます。しかし、生きることを選択し、息子と逃げることに・・・。
なんとドラマチックな話でしょう。続きは、見てからのお楽しみですねぇ（淀川長治さん風に）。

蝶々さんのモデルは、Wikipediaによると、長崎のグラバー邸のグラバーさんの妻、ツルさんが有力だった見たいです。ただ、この時代は、似たような境遇の日本人女性は多くいたようですね。時代が生んだ、悲劇とでもいうのでしょうか・・・。

蝶々夫人の演者としては、三浦環（みうら　たまき）さんが有名です。海外で2000回も公演されたといわれます。三浦さんは、ドイツにも留学されています。この方の像が、グラバー園にあるようなので、是非、行ってみたいです。

This story has been turned into an opera play by Giacomo Puccini, which premiered in Milan, Italy in 1904. This play has been popular until today on stages worldwide.　

プッチーニによって、オペラとなり、イタリアのミラノで、1904年に初公演され、それ以来、全世界で公演されています。

What is the connection to SALZ?　SALZと蝶々夫人との関係は？

You might be wondering why I am picking up such topic on my blog?

Well, the Madama Butterfly Opera recently premiered in the German theatre Nordhausen, and I am especially excited because I was able to provide the butterfly furisode kimono, the lead part ChoCho-san (or CioCio-san) is wearing on stage!!

ここまで読んでいただき、皆さん、蝶々夫人マニアになって頂けたと思います。なぜ、今回、蝶々夫人なのかといいますと・・・、ドイツのノードハウゼンにて、公演しているオペラ蝶々夫人にて、蝶々夫人の着用する着物をSALZで提供させていただいた！からだったのです。

オペラの衣装の方から直々にご連絡頂き、話し合いながら、SALZで衣装を提供させていただいちゃったのです。担当の方と、結構な期間、コンセプトやデザインなど話し合い、SALZで集めているコレクションの中から一番適したお着物を提供しました。

蝶々さんには、やっぱり、蝶々の目立つ着物ですよね。本当に、光栄でした。（注：　すべての衣装ではないですよ）

I haven’t seen the play myself, but judging from the pictures I adore the modern twist of the costumes! Surely it must be difficult to prepare kimono for fast outfit changes on stage!

舞台の上で、提供させてもらった着物が着られているって、まるで夢見たいです。一生懸命、日本全国をまわって（大げさ）、探してきた甲斐がありました。まだ、ドイツでの公演ですので、実際にこのオペラを鑑賞していませんが、いただいたステージ写真を見る限り、着物を現代風にアレンジもしていて、とても、興味深いです。

ステージの上では、なんども着物を着替えるので、役者さんたち、スタッフさんたちのスゴさを感じます。
